Twas the day before Halloween at 3pm… I’m in a meeting at work when Amanda texted me “should we?” along with a screenshot. 5 tickets to Boston, the goal? Trick or Treat in Salem.
I was surprised at the idea and had to do a quick sanity check. The idea sounded just crazy enough that it might not work, but if it did it would be possibly the best Halloween ever. The meeting quickly derailed, and ended in a hung jury – half at “Go, omg fun” and the other half at “You two are nuts” & “my heart is palpating thinking of that idea”.
Where better to trick or treat than in Salem on the streets with the witches? 🧙♀️
By the time I left work, the trip was coming together. For us to score the uber cheap flights, we would leave on the first flight out of MSP and fly back on the last flight out of Boston back to MSP.
Up early we got the kids through TSA and onto the plane, this was their first big plane ride! They were filled with excitement and some nervousness. Everything was low key, with snacks on tray tables and JetBlue’s solid movie selection in each seat the kids kept busy looking out the window and watching a movie.
Once we landed we grabbed a van and headed into Boston, showed the kids around, then got an early lunch. We decided on The Union Oyster House, it’s delicious, the oldest restaurant in America, and they validate parking! While waiting the owner saw the girls, we told them we were in for the day to go trick or treating and she gave them some stuffed animal lobsters!
Next stop Salem.
First stop was the beach, Avery and Brynn wanted to collect some sea shells, we took them to the same spot we found them some shells earlier this year when we were out in Salem. Shells were collected, boots were wet, and spirits were high.
With some dry shoes we roamed around Salem, explored the little shops, people watched, and really just took it all in. When 5pm rolled around we started Trick or Treating, running down Essex St to the Witch House, and of course Allison’s house.
As the sun set we headed back towards Boston to return the car, get dinner and catch the late flight home.
Tired tomorrow? You bet. Worth it? Obviously.
