Monthly – November 2019

Do//

It’s officially the off-season

A Fresh wash & was was before storage is always necessary. I did a full correction last year before storage this year things were still looking pretty nice. I washed, worked on a few light scratches (dang cones) then laid down a fresh coat of wax.

Until next year…

Nora’s Baptism

Nora was Baptized in November, we were surrounded by our wonderful families and celebrated back at our house afterwards!

Lhotse’s 1 year “Got Ya”

We have officially been dog owners for 1 year. He’s still fluffy and cute, and doesn’t pee on the floor anymore! I’ll write that one off as a success.

Wayzata Light Up The Lake

The girls with Santa

https://www.wayzata.org/495/Light-Up-the-Lake This was our first year going to Wayzata’s “Light Up The Lake” evening. This entire event is totally free and the girls had a lot of fun. If you are looking for a fun evening during the holidays I recommend checking this out next year.

Read// (books)

Idaho Falls – Idaho Falls SL-1 incident isn’t nearly as famous as Chernobyl, but it did take place on US soil, and thats what drew me to read this book. This was the first nuclear accident in the United States involving deaths. I knew nothing about Idaho Falls or the SL-1 incident, before reading this book. Idaho Falls does a great job providing some history of the reactor and how it came to be, but also give some information about the men and their lives outside of their jobs.

There is a lot of unknowns around the incident at Idaho Falls and you wont get a solid “why it happened” answer from reading this book and I’m ok with that. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of nuclear power in America, or anyone interested in learning about the consequences of using nuclear power.

No Shortcuts to the Top: Climbing the World’s 14 Highest Peaks – The cold weather has arrived here in Minneapolis. The first cold blast of wind made me immediately think of this book (and that I should read it again). I first read this book a few years ago when I had big dreams of peak climbing. Don’t get me wrong, the dreams are still there, but my self-preservation genes have becoming more prominent with 3 little girls.

This book is an autobiography about Ed Viesturs life and his quest to climb all 14 peaks over 8,000 meters in height (all without supplemental oxygen). This book also includes a pretty complete history of all those climbers who came before him on his journey, it’s amazing to read about all the success and failure in peak climbing. Reading about Ed’s risk management practices and his tendency to avoid anything other than calculated risk he is willing to take clearly was paramount to his success.  Ed’s ability to turn back while only being 100ft from the summit is nothing short of incredible. Assessing risk and managing fear can be done in all aspects of life . I recommend this book, and will be reading it again very soon.

3M decided during Daylight Savings time to remove all the clocks from their Minnesota HQ. This simple action saved them thousands of dollars each year!

Remote Doctors? The future is now! Technology can be awesome, this is a great use case for technology and what we can do to help remote areas receive better care. This should also be very eye opening. Don’t let your local Doctors be replaced my TV screens and microphones.

Listen//

The Mysterious Mr. Epstein

The Mysterious Mr. Epstein – With all the news (or lack of…) when I saw this podcast and had to give it a listen. Lindsay Graham puts out some seriously good content and this one is no exception.

You can hit play on this one and just listen, but don’t get too distracted. I had never heard of Gabby Bernstein before this video, hearing these two talk was motivating. I since have added a few of her books to my read list.

Watch//

Castle Rock

Castle Rock (All Season)

Stephen King and J.J. Abrams (Bad Robot), if that isn’t enough to get you to check this one out then keep reading. This show has been keeping Amanda and I on the edge of our seats with excellent character storytelling We have not yet finished Season 2, while I don’t think it’s as good as Season 1, it is worth watching.

Last Breath – This was a recommendation from The Grey Nato podcast (Ep. 69) – This is an incredible story about Chris Lemons, a saturation diver who had an accident while diving in 2012. This documentary will leave you sitting with sweaty palms. I cant say too much about the film without giving it all away – so give it a watch.

One thing I really liked is that the documentary uses a ton of actual footage and audio from the divers equipment. I knew nothing about saturation diving and it was interesting to see how these men and women work.

Birdhouse

Avery asked for a birdhouse to accompany our bird feeder that has been keeping the birds in the yard very happy. The thought of building one seemed like more of a project than I wanted to take on for the evening. So a few minutes in Tinkercad and 12 hours of printing later we had ourselves a birdhouse!

Vase Mode Test

Believe it or not, I have never experimented with “Vase mode” printing before. I decided I should give it a whirl and what better to print than a rocket ship?
